DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

As your teacher I dedicate myself to creating an environment of inclusion and solidarity with any and all students who have experienced marginalization, minoritization, or oppression. I strive to hold lessons that allow my students to be seen, to feel safe, and where they feel welcome to be themselves. I promise to learn ways to be more inclusive, more understanding and learn by listening to you (all of you), my students.

I believe in the Black Lives Matter movement and I seek ways to do more to underscore my support and vigor that will lead to the safety, belonging, and thriving for anyone oppressed or marginalized because of their race or identity.

I support people of all gender identities and want to provide a nourishing environment so that students feel welcome and unhindered in lessons.

To that end I have been broadening my teaching repertoire to include songs that do not limit the gender role of the singer or the voice type performing the song. The music and songs we learn can represent not only traditional periods and styles but the true diversity of music in the world. Repertoire studied need not be limited to Euro-centric music but can continue to expand to include global music.

As a teacher my goal is to assist, to develop and to encourage my students to learn what they need to become expressive artists. As a performing musician myself I have gained so much from the music I’ve learned to sing and play. I believe that we musicians, once we connect to our inner life, which is our ability to create, we are meant to be representative (of our hopes, dreams, our fantasies). The growth is very personal. When we can identify with and love the music we perform, whether on stage or in our private space, we access the unique wonder of making music.

If you have any questions or accommodations that I should be aware of, please reach out in an email, text or phone call.

Yours,

Dana Anderson, she/her
